Hey,

Welcome to the very first issue of MotorSketch Studio. I’ve been quietly working in the studio on new paintings, and I wanted to start sharing the process with people who actually appreciate hand-painted automotive art.

The Artwork

Alfa Romeo Giulia on Italian Street

Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600, painted in mixed media on hot-pressed Arches watercolor paper. 12” x 16” inches.

The Giulia 1600 epitomizes that era in history - A stylish, sporty vehicle ideal for the young mod, maneuvering the inner-city. As much as I love the flared style of the later GTA, the boxy-stance of the Giulia signals a different attitude I love.

I wanted to emphasize graphic elements, such as the Alfa logo in yellow painted on the wall. The worn Campari ad behind the Giulia pays homage to my love of old advertising posters. I used some sign writing transfer paper to impose the outline of “Alfa Romeo“ in that old script logo style and then paint it in with Holbein artists gouache, in the foreground.

The Giulia, I went with that classic burnt green-blue. Achieved with a mix of watercolor, gouache and pastel pencil. The grill highlights are simply done in a mix of black and white gouache. I hope you like it.
